The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) is a non-profit trade association that represents the interests of its more than 400 short line and regional railroad members in legislative and regulatory matters. Short line and regional railroads are an important and growing component of the railroad industry. Today, they operate and maintain 29 percent of the American railroad industry’s route mileage, and account for 9 percent of the rail industry’s freight revenue and 11 percent of railroad employment.
AAR members include the major freight railroads in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as Amtrak. Based in Washington, DC, the AAR is committed to keeping the railroads of North America safe, fast, efficient, clean, and technologically advanced. We invite any company involved in the ever-growing railroad community to join the AAR.
RSSI is a trade association serving the communication and signal segment of the rail transportation industry.
RSSI continues to grow with over 225 member companies.
Our primary effort each year is to organize and manage a trade show for our members to exhibit their products and services. The association was incorporated in 1966 as the Railway Signal and Communication Supppliers Association Inc. Previous to that time it existed as two separate entities, one for the signal area and one dealing in the communications area of the railroad industry. Although records are vague for the years previous to 1966, there are indications that one or both of these entities were in existence as far back as 1906. In 1972, the corporate name was changed to Railway Systems Suppliers Inc.
The governing body of the RSSI is made up of fourteen directors from fourteen member companies and meets five times a year. These elected Directors each serve for three year terms without remuneration. Any expenses involved are either born by the individual or their company.
TTCI is a world-class intermodal research and test center that offers a wide range of capabilities. The center is owned by the Federal Railroad Administration and is operated in the private sector by the Association of American Railroads.

The Texas Mexican Railway (Tex Mex) dates back to 1856 when construction began on its 157-mile line between Laredo and Corpus Christi, Texas. Today the Tex Mex continues to own and operate that core stretch of track but has extended its network an additional 400 miles through trackage rights in Texas.

In 1986, the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern was established to serve shippers in southern Minnesota and South Dakota along lines formerly owned by Chicago and North Western. In 2002, DM&E was joined by the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern, which took over operations of I & M Rail Link in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. A new company, Cedar American Rail Holdings, Inc. was established to bridge the operations and administration of the two railroads. Together, DM&E and IC&E serve eight states in the heartland of America. The management team of DM&E and IC&E have extensive experience with both Class I and regional railroads. Largest regional railroad system With more than 2,500 miles of track, the combined DM&E and IC&E is the largest contiguous Class II regional railroad system in the United States and the only regional railroad with connections to all major North American Class I railroads.
The Chicago SouthShore & South Bend Railroad is a strategically located shortline carrier connecting northern Indiana’s industrial complex with 20 transcontinental, regional, and local railroads, including all those within the Chicago Switching District.
Headquarters are located in Michigan City, IN. The company is a privately held freight service railroad. Passenger service over the line is provided by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) and is not affiliated with the Chicago SouthShore.
Trackage extends from South Bend, IN westward to Kensington, 115th Street in Chicago and south from Michigan City, IN to Stillwell, IN and Kingsbury Industrial Park. Other principal cities served by the SouthShore include Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, Burns Harbor, Portage, Michigan City, and LaPorte, IN.

Headquartered in Iowa City, Iowa, the Iowa Interstate Railroad Ltd. (IAIS), operates over 500 miles between Omaha, Nebraska and Chicago, Illinois on the former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific mainline, with a branch line from Bureau to Peoria in Illinois.
IAIS was created on November 2, 1984, it is one of the “oldest” regional railroads in existence with connections to all major Class 1 carriers at various points on its line. As a result, IAIS customers are able to ship their goods to or from anywhere in North America.
In America’s Heartland, the IAIS primarily transports grain, agricultural products, steel, scrap, appliances, intermodal containers and trailers, chemicals and forest products.
The IAIS plays an integral part in its customer’s expansion from a regional to a global market base. With its customer-driven operation, the IAIS has successfully increased its customer base.
Manufacturers Railway Company, an Anheuser-Busch company, has been serving the rail industry since 1887, providing locomotive repair and maintenance. Repairs range from rebuilding components to rebuilding entire locomotives.
The name Amtrak is the blending of the words “American” and “Track”. The railroad’s official name is the National Railroad Passenger Corporation. Amtrak began service on May 1, 1971 when Clocker No. 235 departed New York Penn Station at 12:05 a.m. bound for Philadelphia. In 1971, Amtrak announced a schedule of 184 trains, serving 314 destinations. When service began on May 1, 1971, Amtrak had 25 employees. Today, the company employs 22,000 people.
